Weaponized unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) play an important role in current military operations and requirements to weaponize UAVs are expected to increase rapidly in the near future. A standard interface for connecting weapons, UAVs, and their ground control stations (GCSs) will reduce weapon integration risk and cost in unmanned air systems and support improved cooperation and interoperability among NATO militaries. One solution to the problem is to integrate the NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 4586 UAV control standard with the Universal Armament Interface (UAI) standard, which is being introduced in the fighter/bomber domain to decouple weapon integration from aircraft platform operational flight programs. This can be accomplished by tunneling the UAI message set through "private" messages in the STANAG 4586.
