Assessing the Value Creation of RBI

The application of risk-based inspection can generate value for an operating company in a number of ways. However, all of the value generated with RBI can generally be divided into two broad categories: · Reduction in Risk (including the business risk of lost production) or · Cost Reductions Cost reductions are generally easier to quantify and measure, but understanding and properly managing the risk reduction generally provides greater value. Risk reduction is often considered a "soft" number, and if an equipment failure is prevented it is difficult to take credit for the risk reduction. This paper will describe how value creation can be predicted before the application of RBI, and how it can be measured during the implementation and sustaining of the process. A case study is presented from the DuPont Sabine River Works Ethylene Plant. The value analysis was completed at the start of the RBI Implementation effort in 2002, and costs and risk reduction have been tracked for five years. As anticipated, the RBI program has created significant value in both inspection and maintenance cost reductions and in risk reduction.^
