This paper reviews the environmental stressors and their effects on the ecosystems and cultures of the circumpolar Arctic, Transition countries face a similar set of conditions in that they are ripe for economic development, must manage severe contamination issues, and are home to many communities steeped in Old World culture facing intense modernization and globalization.
