The Chevron-owned, Warren-operated Fashing Gas Plant, utilizing an amine treating system to sweeten a natural gas stream, operated f I r s t on MEA, then DEA, and currently formulated MDEA to improve operating areas related to energy usage, Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) performance and corrosion problems. A conversion to formulated MDEA resulted in a 57% reduction in reboiler duty, improved Claus performance due to a 25% increase in H2S feed concentration, and a reduction in corrosion. The conversion cost was recovered in nineteen months of energy savings at reduced operating rates. Comparisons of plant operational data relating to MEA, DEA, and formulated MDEA, as well as formulated MDEA conversion experiences, are discussed in this paper.
