Advances in optical telecommunication within the past decade have fundamentallychanged the way information can be exchanged and distributed globally.Although subject to forces of the commercial marketplace, it is likely that"transparent optical networks" will continue to lead the communication revolutionin the foreseeable future. Among the contemporary challenges of such networks isthe delivery by light waves of high information content/speed to an individualresidential or other user, the so-called "last mile" bottleneck. Current accessstrategies include approaches such as "fiber-to-curb," "fiber-to-home," and so on.
