Surface Modification Techniques for Metallic Implants used in Biomedical Applications

Metallic implants are widely used in biomedical applications because of their high strength and toughness. Some of the commonly used metals for biomedical implants are 316L Stainless Steel, Cobalt-Chromium alloys and Titanium & its alloys. Biocompatibility and corrosion resistance are the major requirements of biomedical implants for their use in highly aggressive body fluids of human beings. Inspite of various research and developments in the biomaterials, failures of implants still occurs during their operation in human body. Research is continuously going on to improve biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of the biomedical implants. Besides developing novel materials for biomedical applications, surface modification of the biomaterials is another economical alternative for improving the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility characteristics of existing biomaterials. This paper presents an overview of various surface modification techniques used for the metallic implants in biomedical applications
