Infrared Thermography of a TMCP Microalloyed Steel Skelp at the Upcoiler

Using an infrared video camera, a series of temperature profiles were taken of the upper surface on a moving thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP)) microalloyed steel skelp following laminar cooling. In addition to the infrared camera area profiles, an emissivity probe was used to obtain both the emissivity and temperature at the mid-face of the moving skelp. Properly sampled infrared camera temperature measurements correlated well with both the probe temperature and a process control pyrometer. Temperature traces taken across the skelp width were correlated with the laminar cooling water jet configuration and an effective impact zone size for the water jet nozzles was quantified. The presence of surface inhomogeneities, such as oxides, was observed at various locations on the skelp surface and these inhomogeneities were found to affect the measured infrared temperatures.
