Homogeneous and heterogeneous mercury (Hg) oxidation were investigated in the presence and absence of HCl in a flow reactor. The effects of single and multi gas components, reaction temperatures and residence times (RT) on homogeneous Hg oxidation and the effects of a vanadia-based catalyst on heterogeneous Hg oxidation were studied. The addition of HCl showed significant effects on Hg oxidation, and the reactor temperature played an important role. In the presence of HCl, O{sub}2 promoted the Hg oxidation while NO inhibited it. Also, O{sub}2 shifted the effective temperature lower while NO shifted it higher. The effects of the RT and the VWT catalyst were significant on Hg oxidation as well.
