Manufacturing Artificial Flaws Using Electric Discharge Machining

Calibration coupons are important for testing the quality of billets, flat steel, and pipe. EDM (electric discharge machining) process provides a repeatable and dependable method for making calibration coupons in any metal product. This is an asset to pipe and steel mills to improve their productivity, to inspection companies to improve their processes, and for inspection equipment manufacturers to provide expanded capabilities of their equipment. EDM goes beyond just making notches. EDM artificial flaws are now being made with shape and form that closely resemble real flaws such as pits, eccentric wall, and corrosion.
