The subject of this paper examines a case study of upgrading new resonator technology to older laser cutting machines. Laser Retrofit Programs represent a relatively new concept that renovates existing cutting machines with "state of the art" resonator technology and related components. As a result, performance is greatly enhanced while maintenance and operating expenses are significantly reduced. In the past, sheet metal fabrication companies acquired new laser cutting equipment at a large capital outlay in order to achieve faster processing speeds or thicker cutting capacity. Today, because many existing laser machines are in excellent condition and are only limited by the resonator specifications, a Laser Retrofit Program represents a viable alternative to purchasing a new unit. Raymond Corporation, a manufacturer of material handling products located in Greene, NY, selected a Laser Retrofit Program to meet the increasing demands of their metal cutting operation. The first laser retrofit was installed in January 2004 followed by a second laser retrofit in March 2005. The case study will explore the following relevant topics: Introduction: The Raymond Corporation Operation. Selection Process: Why Select a Laser Retrofit Program? The Laser Retrofit Concept. Application Issues. Results: Performance Improvements and Cost Reductions. ROI and Project Payback Analysis. Conclusion.
