PROBLEMS IN THE INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION OF SPECIFICATION STANDARDS FOR MEASUREMENT OF MACHINERY NOISE EMISSION

The ability to measure noise emission accurately is essential for manufacturers and UK industry as a whole to demonstrate compliance with regulations, which exist to protect both the workforce and the community. The main objective of this study was to identify the limitations, failings and gaps in knowledge of currently used procedures for machinery noise emission measurement. To achieve this objective, a survey was conducted, seeking the views and experiences of industry, on particular problem areas they have encountered. The survey was targeted at sectors of UK industry that were involved in measurement of noise emission of machines and products, with special attention to measurement of sound power. The survey was therefore aimed mainly at manufacturers of machines for which measurement of noise emission levels may be required, but it also included acoustics consultants, noise measurement equipment manufacturers and suppliers, test laboratories, and manufacturer's trade associations. This paper summarises an assessment of the problem areas encountered.
