The aging fleet of coal fired power plants in Europe increases the pressure on the operators for modernization and replacement. The main drivers are fuel cost and environmental requirements, particularly the pohtical commitments on CO{sub}2 reduction targets. Modern high efficient coal-fired power plants like DATTELN 4 were developed in answer to these market conditions. These power plants feature advanced steam cycle design, highest steam parameters, and high efficient components. The paper describes the design features and high temperature materials of the Alstom STF100 steam turbine used in the ultra-supercritical power plant DATTELN 4. Besides the sophisticated cycle parameters, low loss steam inlet sections, advanced 3D blade design, effective sealing technologies, and top performing large titanium last stage blades contribute to the outstanding efficiency level of this 1,100 MW unit. Moreover, the large exhaust areas together with the Alstom single bearing design lead to a very compact layout. To enable 1,100 MW and to serve the apparent power requirement of the grid the Alstom GIGATOP 2-pole turbogenerator is designed for 1,400 MVA, which is a new milestone in 2-pole technology.
