From damage statistics and daily experience with process plant operation we know of many causes and reaction mechanisms resulting in damages and, finally, reducing the service life of a plant. In this context many factors like Planning, Design, Production, Erection and Installation, Acceptance Procedures, and Operation, and also Maintenance Strategies, are playing an important role. This means that damage to components cannot always blamed on the materials used, but that occurrence of damage can also be influenced significantly by an optimised design. With regard to operating temperatures to be expected in the future which exceed 600°C(Concept 700°C Power Stations) this is going to play a still more important role because with certainty the fundamentals for service life expectancy based on the traditional practice and code requirements with guaranteed values above 2×10{sup}5 h must be reconsidered in general. Therefore, the changes to be expected with regard to design concepts and higher operating loads and the new testing concepts required by these changes will be presented in this contribution as seen by an approved monitoring body.
