Evaluating the Performance of Animal Shelters: An Application of Data Envelopment Analysis - (PPT)

There are many animal welfare organizations across the United States that are dedicated to improving the treatment of domestic animals. Due to location, demographic, and economic factors, each animal shelter has its own unique characteristics. The true magnitude of pet overpopulation is hard to estimate because there is no standardized method for reporting individual shelter data. The Asilomar Accords data collection and reporting guidelines are helpful for developing local, regional, and even national strategies for animal shelters. DEA provides a way to: 1) assess the relative efficiency of animal shelters 2) identify strategies for improving the performance of a particular shelter 3) identify potential shelter partnerships to better utilize resources within a community.
