Manual handling tasks create external spine moments that must be resisted and controlled through coordinated muscle recruitments. With asymmetric lifting there is an increase in the external lateral bending and twisting moments acting on the spine. These moments are indicators of asymmetric muscle recruitments that result in localized loading of specific muscles and connective tissues within the spine (Lavender et al., 1992). Hence, occupational tasks that require asymmetric lifting have been associated with the development of work-related low back pain (Andersson, 1991, Waters et al., 1993). While some would argue that the exposure to lateral bending and twisting moments could be controlled through training on lifting techniques, the literature suggest that training has limited effectiveness in preventing low back pain (Daltroy et al., 1997; Lavender et al., 2007; van Poppel et al., 1999), even with training that specifically focused on minimizing the these moments (Lavender et al., 2002; Lorenz et al., 2002).
