A Seven State Retail Survey on the Preservative Retention Conformance Rate of an AWPA/ALSC Treated Wood Product

AWPA currently lists more than 8 above ground use wood preservative systems for use on residential lumber. ALSC uses accredited labs (ISO 17020 & ISO 17025) and inspection agencies to monitor and analyze this above-ground pressure treated wood. During a2-3 month period in mid-2014, above ground pressure treated wood was sampled from seven states in and around the mid-south area to provide a snapshot of commercial lumber. Two boards were selected from two separate and different bundles located within thirty-six "Big Box" treated wood distributors/sellers. The study is slightly biased in that only boards that were 100% sapwood or close to being 100% sapwood of southern pine were chosen but other than this one parameter, no other bias issues are known. These boards were sampled for preservative penetration and preservative retention by routine AWPA Methods and Standards. The wood was transferred under Chain-of-Custody forms to an ALSC listed and BO 17025 accredited analytical lab for analysis. This study reports on the findings of the retentions only and compares the conformance rate to previously published work by the AWPA/ICC-ES T-2/T-7 Task Force.
