A Potential Test Method for Assessing Field Applied Fire Retardant Treatments

The risk of large scale fires in areas through which electric distribution and transmission lines run has encouraged utilities to search for better methods for protecting wood poles. One problem with identifying new materials is the lack of simple, standard methods for assessing fire resistance. A simple method is described that allows fire retardant systems to be evaluated on short pole sections under controlled conditions using relatively inexpensive materials. Further tests are underway to more fullydevelop this system.
