A new video enhancement technology based in ophthalmologic research to remove the red taint from pictures of the eye retina which serves to make diagnosis simpler has been expanded into a digital image processing software and hardware based product that allows for clearer views in turbid underwater video applications. Clarity and turbidity greatly affect visibility. Some locations have limited visibility as a result of a high particle content that restricts the range and clarity of the camera images. Larger particles cause light backscattering which requires a decreased camera aperture, further reducing visibility. LYYNs video enhancement technology offers a technique for enhancing visibility, giving clearer images at greater distances with wider apertures underwater. This paper describes the hardware and software used to achieve video enhancement and gives some examples of applications.
