Given their size, small wind turbines can be tested in large wind tunnels, rather than on the field. Wind tunnel testing offers some advantages that cannot be realized in outdoors settings; these advantages stem largely from controlability of the flow environment and testing infrastructure. This paper discusses the advantages of wind tunnel testing for small wind turbines, proposes a rapid and accurate testing methodology, and explores the possibilities for using specialized facilities to do research in the wind energy field. It does so in the context of the testing capabilities and practices that exist at the National Research Council Canada.
