Due to the challenging environmental operating conditions of automotive, the presence of ionic contaminants requires specialised monitoring in any no clean soldering process. Identifying the types of contaminants and their source as well as establishing the design susceptibility to the associated failure mechanisms is critical at the earliest stages of the design lifecycle. Automotive electronics deploy a range of validation tests to establish the risk of all contaminants to the reliability of the module. This case study will demonstrate how a detected validation test electrochemical failure was subsequently analysed to determine root cause and introduce preventive measures.
