Contamination Status and Accumulation Features of Organohalogen Compounds in Raccoon Dogs(Nyctereutes procyonoides)from Japan

The present study investigated contamination status and accumulation features of organohalogen compounds,such as CHLs,PCBs,DDTs,HCHs,HCB,PBDEs and HBCDs in raccoon dogs collected from Ehime,Osaka and Kanagawa prefectures in Japan during 2001-2003.Organohalogen compounds were detected in all the samples analyzed in this study,and CHLs was the dominant compound,followed by PCBs>DDTs>=HCHs>PBDEs>HCB>=HBCDs.Significant differences in the concentrations of CHLs and DDTs in raccoon dogs were observed among these areas,but not for other organochlorine compounds.This could be due to region-specific usage of CHLs and DDTs in the past.In addition,residue levels of hepta-,octa-and nona-BDEs in raccoon dogs from Kanagawa were higher than those of Ehime and Osaka,indicating that raccoon dogs from Kanagawa are exposed to these BDE congeners originating from technical octa-mixtures.On the other hand,HBCDs were not detected in raccoon dogs from Kanagawa,whereas accumulation was found in Ehime and Osaka,suggesting the presence of HBCD source(s)in these two prefectures.On lipid weight basis,oxychlordane,p,p'-DDD and high-brominated congeners were higher in livers than those in muscles or adipose tissues.Additionally,composition of HBCDs in livers was different from that of adipose tissues,with higher accumulation of gamma-HBCD in livers and alpha-HBCD in adipose tissues.These results suggest specific accumulation in raccoon dog livers and/or continuous exposure to these contaminants.
