Applications of Earth Observation Data for Insurance and Reinsurance

Earth observation data can offer the insurance industry improvements in key risk information requirements including exposure mapping and classification, monitoring of natural hazard events, post-event damage assessment, risk parameterisation, hazard model calibration and model validation. This paper illustrates the relevance and importance of earth observation data using two examples; hazard assessment, where satellite imagery is used in bushfire mapping, and exposure identification where image processing is utilised to establish innovative ways of extracting parameters such as roof type, building height and building age, that can then be used in computer models for the analysis of catastrophe risks. We show how remote sensing is influencing the technical aspects of catastrophe risk assessment and explore how remotely sensed data can be integrated into insurance risk assessment tools and services. These techniques are particularly useful in emerging insurance territories where no records are available to inform the models.
