Tablet technology is a wireless computer (PC) technology that allows users to navigate and operatethe software installed on the tablet through touch screen technology. This technology has becomevery popular since its introduction in 2009 and is increasingly being utilized in different applications.The education sector world-wide is also starting to adopt this technology to facilitate the learning andteaching processes and improve the effectiveness of learning as well as teaching.This research paper identifies the unique characteristics of this new technology, and investigates thebenefits that this technology can offer to students and lecturers at the University of Pretoria, which isone of the largest universities in South Africa. It also investigates the procedures and systems that willneed to be put in place to incorporate tablet technology. Finally, it makes recommendations for theeffective implementation of tablet technology at universities in general and the University of Pretoria inparticular.
