Safe Use of Microwaves in Chemical Processing

Microwave heating is an unusual technology in the sense that it is a technology far more commonly used in residential kitchens than in industrial manufacturing settings. The development of the low-cost magnetron in the 1960s led to relatively inexpensive home microwave ovens. As a result, all of us have used lkW, 2.450 GHz microwaves to heat coffee or cook food but very few chemical engineers have used "high power" microwaves to heat flammable mixtures. The purpose of this talk is to acquaint you with idiosyncrasies of microwaves and discuss aspects of safely using microwaves with flammable materials.
