For more than twenty years, furnace operators have sought to save energy and improve refractory life through the application of emissivity ceramic hot face coatings of various emissivity values and structures. By raising the emissivity of the hot face, radiant heat transfer is increased and the temperature of the refractory substrate should be reduced. The fundamental physics and material sciences are valid, however initial energy saving benefits provided from previous coatings have been short lived, especially at temperatures above 2,000° F. This lack of life was due to emissivity agent degradation, loss of adhesion and reactions occurring with the underlying substrates. Thermal shock could also not be handled by these initial materials.
