Recent advances in catalytic processes, especially with respect to Fluid Catalytic Cracking, are playing a bigger role in bridging the gap and facilitating integration of refining and petrochemical facilities. The refining industry has been forced to modernize facilities due to changes in fuel specifications and crude diet; particularly with a shift to heavier and sourer crude. This modernization is strongly influenced by the growing demand for diesel/distillates versus motor gasoline and has a profound impact on the crude processing requirements.
