High antioxidative capacity of Verbascum thapsus L. originated from metal contaminated area is induced upon treatment with Zn

Verbascum thapsus I., was found to be a dominant plant species at metal polluted disposal area from the hydrometallurgical jarosite zinc production process. The following amounts of trace elements were determined at the polluted area: Zn<10%, Fe 23%, Pb 4%, Cu 0.4% and Cd 0.004%. High concentrations of several heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu) were determined in leaves and roots of one year old plants. Root of plants grown in field had higher accumulating capacity than leaf for all heavy metals. Using original seeds we investigate the antioxidative capacity of Verbascum thapsus, grown hydroponically at different concentrations of Zn (1-100mM). Content of phenolics and total antioxidative capacity of soluble leaf and extract were higher than in root. Results indicated that content of phenolics in root is important in protection of Verbascum thapsus against prooxidative effects of Zn. Root-shoot communication as the important defense mechanism during oxidative stress caused by high concentrations of metals is discussed.
