It is necessary to find the efficient utilization of unused biomass. Charcoal is a typical solid fuel obtained from biomass. For the purpose of designing a carbon-fueled fuel cell using charcoal derived from biomass, a fundamental study on direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) was conducted in this study. Using a carbon-rod as both fuel and anode, the effects of cathode material and electrolyte on the open-circuit voltages (OCV) were investigated. The results showed that the experimental cell using a Ni plate cathode and 12M NaOH electrolyte achieves an OCV of 0.938 V. Based on these engineering data, a fundamental electrochemical cell for DCFC was designed.
