Liquid-feed flame spray pyrolysis (LF-FSP) as described in this paper was developed and patented in our group some 15 years ago and is the basis of a number of papers from our group. LF-FSP is also practiced very successfully by a number of other groups. In the UM process, metal alkoxide and/or carboxylate precursor complexes are dissolved in alcohol solvents (typically ethanol) at concentrations of 1-20 wt % ceramic content but typically 5-10 wt. %. These solutions are aerosolized with oxygen at atmospheric pressures into a 1.5 m x 50 mm dia. quartz tube and ignited generating very turbulent flames with peak temperatures of 2000°C. Combustion is quenched very rapidly such that temperatures are 300-500°C at the exit point in the system.
