Application of Risk Based Inspection in Pressure Relief Valves

One knows that the sole purpose of a pressure relief valve is to protect life and safety of pressure system. If a deteriorative relief valve failed to operate correctly as required, a catastrophic event maybe occurred while no other protective means provided. So, inspection and maintenance strategies of such a critical item must be capable of arresting the know failure modes, timely, and cost effectively. Following a brief description and statistical analysis results of decayed conditions of pressure relief valves in a pressure system, this paper presents the likelihood of risk based inspection methodology applied in assessing pressure relief valves of some pressure systems. A case of statistical analysis results of decayed conditions and corresponding operating parameters will be used and the weighting factors of the operating parameters are also presented.
