This paper discusses procedures and problems associated with the installation of up to nine (9) electrolytic tiltmeter sensors in twelve separate casings to remotely monitor the shoring of two deep excavations at the New Natomas and the South River Pump Stations, in Sacramento, CA. The paper discusses the installation and monitoring procedures. It details some of the problems that were encountered during the setup and monitoring periods, both logistical and operator induced. The attempts to address the problems, whether successful or unsuccessful, are discussed. The paper concludes by addressing our ability to overcome these problems and meet our objective to use the data collected to monitor shoring stability, identify construction related issues and alert the contractor to potential problems in near real time.
