Introduction: An alternative to total hip replacement in young and active patients is the resurfacing hip prosthesis. A precise positioning of the femoral component in particular is essential for a reduction of complications and a longer life span of the prosthesis. Especially the 'stem shaft angle' and the version of the prosthetic head are important predictors of the outcome of a metal-on-metal surface arthroplasty. The hypothesis is that the positioning of the femoral component by the conventional positioning method will show a larger variation in the position of the femoral component (and the 'stem shaft angle' in particular) than when computer navigation is used. Methods: In a multi-centre, prospective, randomized, controlled study (Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00391937) we will compare the results of patients who had a resurfacing prosthesis placed by the conventional position method with those patients in whom the resurfacing prosthesis is placed with computer navigation technique. Patients who meet the criteria for inclusion in the study will be randomized into 2 groups: A) those in which the resurfacing hip prosthesis will be positioned by the conventional instrumentation positioning method (lateral reference jig) ; and B) those in which the resurfacing hip prosthesis will be positioned using 'computer assisted surgery'. The researcher / data analyst (MR) is blinded for the type of intervention.
