A Librarian Without Books:Systems Librarianship in Astronomy

The author discusses one aspect of the changing nature of librari-anship by focusing on a high-tech microcosm of an already high-tech profession,that of systems librarianship. She is the Systems Librarian for the AdvancedTechnology Solar Telescope (ATST) project, based in Tucson, Arizona. Theproject is engaged in the design and development of a 4-meter solar telescope,planned for the summit of Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii. Most of the day-to-clay tasks at ATST involve software in one form or another; the author makes heavyuse of Remote Desktop and Virtual Network Computing (VNC) to manage in-stallations on eight different servers (four Windows, four Unix) in two states, plusstaff desktops (Windows XP) from the comfy chair in front of her computer.
