Through the presented experiments the Dxidation behaviour of three enamelling steel grades by thermogravimetric and metallographic methods were investigated. The measurements were adequate to study the effects of steel grade, gas atmosphere, and the surface preparation on the oxidation, which - as it could be seen in the case of enamelled samples - influences greatly the quality of the bond between the enamel and base metal. The experiment results shown that the aluminium killed enamelling steel grades (DC01EK) forms the greatest amount of scale, their oxidation increases with the increase of water vapour content, and by nickel plating the oxidation can be reduced in a great manner. The boron added aluminium killed and the IF steels are oxidised in a smaller degree, and the effect of nickel layer is small or it can not be identified. While for the DC04EK-B grade steel samples the oxidation enhancing effect of the water vapour prevailed in all cases, for the IF grade samples it was manifested only in the case of nickel plated ones.
