Case 1: A 65-year-old man implanted with a VVI-R pacemaker for AF and suffered from a cerebral embolism. Case 2: A 79-year-old woman suffered from a cerebral embolism and implanted with a DDD-R pacemaker for SSS. Both patients had flaccid hemiplegia, severe disuse syndrome and cardiovascular deconditioning with chronotropic incompetence and orthostatic hypotension, which arrested their rehabilitation. We utilized rate-responsive mode of the pacemakers and periodically programmed the parameters in variables to meet metabolic demand during rehabilitation exercise and finally to improve ADL.
