For belter understanding the influence of the wood machining key parameters on finished surfaces quality, a 5 factors study was performed: species, machining level, grit size, polishing level and type of varnish. Surface quality was assessed using an artificial vision system. From a numerical treatment, a "pseudo-roughness" profile was established permitting to derive three objective surface evaluation criteria. These criteria were then validated using a subjective surface analysis (enquiries) performed by a sensory panel. A statistical model relating one of the criteria with the processing conditions is presented, enabling to predict the quality of a finished surface, either from a given product sequence (machining, polishing, sanding, finishing) either from an intermediate surface evaluation.
