AFRL/OEM engagement via MAI program is addressing/shaping broad industry infrastructure for this challenging research area: Broad range of activity addressing design and manufacturing challenges; Strong and motivated team with integrated goals and unified direction; Deeper verification and validation of residual stress modeling software; Integration of residual stress into the design, manufacture, and sustainment processes. Substantial Challenges Remain: Demonstrate process consistency and characterize variability; Establish consensus best-practices/standards for: Residual stress measurement; Data and results interchange; First article(s) characterization and lot release; Quality management concepts and systems for residual stress. Educate wide-ranging supply chain stakeholders about benefits and value of these promising technologies for broader acceptance.
