Due to global warming, great efforts are done to reduce CO_2 emissions of vehicles. This is the reason why more and more products are evaluated concerning their carbon footprint on the one hand and optimized manufacturing processes regarding an increase of efficiency on the other hand, Hollow cold forged transmission components are suitable for both, efficient manufacturing processes and less carbon footprint. The manufacturing process of hollow transmission components with gears and/or flanges by forging is discussed in this paper. At first problems occurring in the forging of hollow parts with gear tooth and high requirements to positional accuracy are analyzed. This theoretical research is supplemented by experimental investigations concerning fold free flange upsetting of tubular components. Finally the results of theoretical and experimental research are summarized and conclusions for subsequent researches are drawn.
