Clutch systems constitute elementary components for automotive applications. Drivetrain and therefore clutch development is a permanently changing process with increasing competition. Therefore, the objective is to enable a virtual prototyping approach based on the Virtual Clutch Development Model (VCDM). In order to reach the objective a co-operation with experts on different domains is set-up together with IPEK - Institute of Product Development Karlsruhe. GM Powertrain and IPEK are responsible for detailed technical modeling including validation based on test drives and evaluation of computed results whereas in addition LMS-imagine implements the surrounding GUI-software-structure based on LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim. The GUI-based VCDM enables the design engineer to run simulations to evaluate and to estimate the driver's rating for the different phenomena dependent on parameter changes as well as component's durability issues. This paper explains the methodological approach, the respective evaluation criteria and phenomena ratings as well as the overall operating workflow.
