Elevator shafts are often pressurised to avoid ingress of smoke and fire. In tall buildings even the elevator lobby may be save against ingress of smoke due to the requirements of pressurised staircases and elevators for the fire brigades and their anterooms. With some more requirements for a save performance (secure function of the machinery, secure power supply, function of the control system, etc.), these elevators could be fully used even in the case of fire and would enlarge the capacity for building evacuation largely. The paper discusses the fluid dynamic and meteorological fundamentals which are relevant in particular for tall and high rise buildings. Their complex interaction can be calculated nowadays and motorised windows allow even to control the pressure situation!
