The Next Generation Car major research project brings together the activities and infrastructure of the DLR in the field of road vehicles. Methods and technologies for the holistic development of road transport vehicles for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow are developed and presented in different innovators such as the NGC Urban or the NGC Interurban. A part of this work also includes developments for structurally integrated plastic and sandwich components, such as are implemented in the example of a light commercial vehicle concept for the urban area and presented in the following paper. The objective of the technology platform is a significant increase in the transported volume and payload for a small, very short and flexible commercial vehicle concept for urban mobility. To achieve these goals, new loading and unloading concepts are analyzed, the necessary components optimized with regard to installation space, and these then integrated into a new kind of vehicle platform. Furthermore, continuous-fiber-reinforced plastic and sandwich parts are envisaged not only for components such as the CNG pressure accumulator but also for the supporting structure. The CNG accumulator is characterized in particular by having an innovative, lightweight structive making intensive use of fiber composites and being adaptive to installation space, thereby making possible an optimum use of installation space with a minimal gain in weight. The load-path-optimized frame structure and the flexurally loaded infill elements or shear areas are designed with different sandwich configurations and optimized. Special emphasis falls here on dimensioning and failure modes, as well as force application into the flat sandwich components.
