With the customer's increasing demand for ecologically sustainable vehicles with low fuel consumption and the legislature's increasingly strict regulations regarding CO_2 emissions, the rigorous application of lightweighting strategies represents a major success factor for the automotive industry. This paper describes the limits of traditional lightweighting strategies and presents the concept of functionalized hybrid lightweight design. Areas of action for future research and development work on the requisite process chains and manufacturing processes are derived from this as also a holistic consideration of design, planning and production.
