In passenger car development, prototype components are not only an important success factor but also a cost factor. This is why Mercedes-Benz takes a great deal of trouble to match prototype components and the corresponding tools as optimally as possible to the requirements of the development process. This objective cannot be achieved without innovative suppliers. A number of examples of the requirements made of prototype components in the development department will be described in some detail as also the corresponding projects with prototype suppliers.
