SANTEE COOPER CROSS GENERATING STATION, UNITS 3 4: THE NEW GENERATION OF CLEAN, EFFICIENT COAL POWER

Santee Cooper, South Carolina's state owned electric and water utility, is currently constructing two 600 MW class units at the Cross Generating Station, which will be two of the largest and cleanest coal fired units built in the US in the last 15 years. Upon achieving commercial operation in 2007 and 2009, these units will support Santee Cooper's role in supplying electricity to over 150,000 residential customers as well as to 20 electric cooperatives, 32 large industrial facilities, several municipal utilities and the Charleston Air Force base. Santee Cooper's Cross Generating Station located in Berkley County, South Carolina is a four unit site with two 600 MW class coal fired units currently in operation. Cross Unit #2, supplied by ALSTOM, has been in operation since 1984. Cross Unit #1 has been in operation since 1995. In July 2002, ALSTOM Power was awarded the contract to supply and install a 600 MW class coal fired boiler, including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units and boiler auxiliary equipment for Unit #3 at Santee Cooper's Cross Generating Station. ALSTOM received a subsequent order for an identical unit for Cross Unit #4 in May 2004. Both units will have the ability to burn Eastern Bituminous Coal as well as a blend of up to 30% Petroleum Coke. Upon achieving commercial operation of Cross Unit #4 in 2009, ALSTOM will have supplied boilers with over 1800 MW of coal fired capacity at this station.
