Often it is difficult to interpret data from laboratory or field experiments because of the complexity of the experiments, uncertainty associated with the environmental excitation, variation of the structural configuration and the volume of data. In a typical model basin experiment it is not uncommon to have forty to over one-hundred channels being recorded with sample rates typically ranging from ten to one-hundred hertz. Of course there are exceptions, but the point here being that there is generally a volume of data being generated that is mountainous and can easily overwhelm the analyst, In fairness it should be noted that not all of the measurements are intended to be analyzed in detail and those channels may simply be viewed to corroborate anticipated behavior. So even if one discounts the data to be analyzed quite arbitrarily by half there is still a great deal of data left. The analysis of the data maybe automated to some degree but the visual connection between the various outputs is left to the design engineer and subtle yet critical design issues can easily be left unnoticed for a time.
