SPATIAL DATA INTEGRATION THROUGH THE NEW YORK STATEWIDE DIGITAL ORTHOIMAGERY PROGRAM

The New York Statewide Digital Orthoimagery Program (NYSDOP) was created in 2000 to supply up-to-date, high accuracy orthoimagery to a broad customer base. The NYSDOP differed from earlier programs by providing several different options for image type (color, panchromatic, CIR) and resolution (2-ft to 0.5-ft) to meet needs which varied across the State. In the first 5 years, the NYSDOP integrated a wide range of data types. These data sets were obtained from County and State agencies, as well as neighboring states and Canada. The data sets were used from project planning through final quality reviews. As the NYSDOP has evolved, the variety and scope of data sets used has expanded and will continue. At the same time, the NYSDOP orthoimagery is becoming the common reference layer which serves to unite spatial data generation and improvement efforts across the State at many different levels of government. In the end, the NYSDOP is benefiting from a feedback cycle within the NY GIS data community where data created using one generation of imagery is used in the creation of the next.
