The goal of this study is to develop a decision support system (DSS) that can aid utilities in process selection to control taste and odor (T&O), and also to establish the operational strategies of T&O control. The processes evaluated in this study include adsorption (PAC, GAC-filter adsorbers and GAC-post-filter adsorbers), oxidation (O3, UV with H2O2), biofiltration (sand, GAC), membranes (NF) and hybrid systems (PAC/UF). The DSS tool is composed of three modules; input and output module, and model algorithms. Based on input parameters (I.e., water quality and process parameters), the algorithm selects the design and operation conditions required to meet the desired level of treatment goal (I.e., effluent target MIB concentration of 10 ng/L) and also compute the capital, and operation and maintenance (O&M) cost associated with the input parameters. The output from the DSS is a ranking of the different processes based on the cost analysis and also consideration of other water quality condition.
