We are able to reproduce the observed oscillation l - v power spectrum over a large dynamic range (≈ 10{sup}3) for a wide range of frequency and degree using a new parametric model. Inversion of the frequencies obtained by using this model to describe a high signal-to-noise m-averaged spectrum, based on 360 days of velocity observations from the MDI experiment on board the SOHO satellite, yields a profile for the mean internal seismic structure of the Sun that is more accurate than that previously obtained. However, despite the impressive accuracy of the new spectral model, small systematic differences between the model and the data still remain for the higher degree modes.
