3071 days of full-disc data from two sets of observations are compared to search for low-frequency p and g modes. The data were collected by the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON) and the Global Oscillations at Low Frequencies (GOLF) instrument onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). Statistical tests are used to search for prominent structures that occur in the same bins in each of the two amplitude spectra. These tests include searching for single prominent spikes, two spikes that are consecutive in frequency, spikes over the width of the mode and multiplet structures that are observed because of solar rotation (for modes with l ≥ 1). The probability that these structures could be found as part of the background noise in both spectra is calculated taking into account that the background noise is not completely independent. These probabilities are used to determine the significance of a detection. The detections have then been compared to predicted mode frequencies.
