Clean air regulations have been the driving force for the reduction of stationary and tailpipe emissions. The net result has been significant refinery infrastructure and technology changes in units that produce both gasoline and diesel fuel components. Refiners have relied on innovative technologies that more effectively remove sulfur and other resultant air pollutants from fuel components and have rapidly applied them within the refinery configuration. The technologies selected have included both hardware modifications and catalytic improvements to provide for essentially zero sulfur fuels. Refiners have applied these technologies both where the contaminants are removed before conversion occurs as well in a final step before being blended into the finished cleaner burning fuels of the future. Table 1 highlights these recent changes in on-road diesel and gasoline sulfur specifications.
